Ideas for streams! I am nowhere near academia or psychology in my life and I love learning stuff about that from you. Like today you said personality doesn’t set behavior and I wanted to hear more about that because for example my personality is “introverted” and it seems like my behavior then is “doesn’t hang out with people as much as my extroverted friends.” I saw a tweet today about how tragedy of the commons is one of the most popular untrue things, maybe you could do something like that for psychology? Like a Devon’s top ten psychology myths debunked! Now that I’m saying that maybe that’s what your books are… I’ve only read Laziness halfway because I don’t read books much. Hmm .. Well with all that being said I also like when you and Madeline just talk about stuff you’re excited about, those are good too. I hope I don’t have work meetings and am able to catch the furry fest stream!
Thanks for sending this! I really appreciate the encouragement.
I would love to do a psychology myths debunked series. There is so much misinformation out there, and people with a very rudimentary understanding of decades old studies often seem so confident in their understanding of human nature, when the reality is so much more complex and the existing science is so shoddy.
Especially when it comes to neuroimaging and brain science. Those fields are really in their infancy and the quality of the work being done is extremely poor, but brain scans look “sciencey” and discussing human traits as innate and biological appeals to people so much.
I have a whole long passage about the failure of most social psychological studies to replicate in my new book that i’m working on.
I would love to talk about this stuff on stream more. I’d also love to have some kind of research round up where I discuss newly published articles and books and critique or expound upon them. I’ll have to think of the right format for it but this is definitely something I’d like to do. @testdevice has also suggested we do something in the format of the You’re Wrong About podcast, where I introduce a book/bit of research and talk it through while she responds and asks questions and serves as a bit of viewer surrogate (and of course people in the chat could contribute to that too).
I’m glad you’re enjoying what we are doing so far. If you can’t make the furry stream, it will be archived on twitch and on youtube to watch later!
