Sometimes someone will talk about an acquaintance who is an “undiagnosed narcissist with obvious borderline personality disorder traits” and I’m like… We used to just say “a bitch”, and I know all the reasons why that was bad, but I’m not sure this is better.
Armchair psychology has become a popular way for people to “justify” a sense of superiority in vilifying ordinary (sometimes genuinely unwell) people.
Like it’s not just, “they were a jerk to me unfairly,” it’s, “there’s something fundamentally wrong with them and I’ve appointed myself qualified to make that judgement.”
Hey actually- It’s morally fine to personally dislike something or someone (even without justification!) so long as you don’t bully them or try to revoke their rights.
And if you sincerely believe they’re struggling with mental health disorders… help them you fucking weirdo! Be patient and sympathetic.
Assuming that someone who’s just an asshole sometimes must automatically be struggling with narcissism or bpd or bipolar… is ableist!! Especially if you use that to slander them for the sake of some peer validation.
